With Christmas around the corner, the economy slow, bankruptcies sky rocketing the question remains how should people be planning for this holiday season and using credit wisely….so they are not having the credit card blues in January?

Credit Cards are not a bad thing it is how you manage them, they are a tool for money management.

Ask yourself:

Ø How much credit can I handle?

Ø Will I be able to pay my balance in full every month?

Ø Do I really benefit from the rewards program it offers?

Ø Is this credit card really best suiting my needs?

A “vacation fun jar” can help to keep your summer costs down, and make the summer a memorable one. It was one of the great suggestions from a mother in our recent “Kids and Cash” seminar. Instead of an expensive vacation, she and her children create a list of fun activities in and around home. Then they write the activities on small pieces of paper and tuck them into a jar. She and the children agreed that no matter what the children draw out of the jar is the fun activity of the day. She tried it last year with great success, and the whole family is looking forward to a repeat.

That was just one of the questions that started interesting discussions at a Kids & Cash seminar last week. Some in the group felt that it was important for children learn that everyone works to earn a living, and children should too. Others felt that tracking the chores to figure out the allowance would be too much of a chore for the parents. Still others worried that some chores wouldn’t be done whenever the kids didn’t need the money. Money Mentors knows the importance of teaching children how to handle money. So we have a couple of cautionary notes as you decide how to give children an allowance.

1. Giving children a consistent and routine amount of money every week will allow them to learn how to stay within their income. Fluctuating income is too challenging for most youngsters.
2. Some children have difficulty following through on tasks and they may have limited access to allowance income as a result. Often these are children who really need to learn about decision making and living with consequences.

In a recent internal memo, Canada Revenue Agency has informed its agents that there have been many questions on the topic of TFSA contribution room and a need to provide accurate information to consumers. The answer is that you need to turn 18 to accumulate contribution room. Now that is good news! In fact, when you look at all of the features of the TFSA, we think that it is all good news for savers!

Money Mentors suggests that you open your TFSA as soon as possible to start earning that tax-free investment income. In order to contribute to a TFSA, you must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Canada and have a valid social insurance number (SIN) at the time your Tax-Free Savings Account is opened.

The Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) is a non-refundable tax credit for the renovation of an individual’s personal residence between January 27, 2009 and February 1, 2010. If you spend between $1000 and $10,000 on eligible renovations, your tax credit would be 15% of the expenses, after the $1000 minimum threshold, up to a maximum credit of $1350 for the family unit. The renovation expenditures you claim must be items “of an enduring nature and integral to the dwelling”, so new hardwood floors would qualify but furniture would not, and a new furnace would qualify but cleaning the furnace would not. There are plenty of examples on the government’s websites to help you figure out if your renovation plans qualify.

Registered Disability Savings Plans deadline

March 2, 2009 is the application deadline for the 2008 RDSP Grant and Bond. These are very generous programs, so if you qualify, don’t miss the deadline.The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is designed to accumulate funds for the benefit of a disabled person. Any Canadian resident under the age of 60 who is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit can establish an RDSP. There is no annual limit on contributions but lifetime contributions cannot exceed $200,000

The RDSPs have some features that are similar to RESPs:
- Contributions are not tax-deductible, so they are not taxable on withdrawal.
- Investment income earned in the plan accumulates tax-free.
- Grants & investment income earned in the plan are taxable on withdrawal.
- The Government of Canada has some programs to help the plan grow.
For RDSPs, these include the CDS Grant and the CDS Bond, and together they could pay as much as $4500 this year into the RDSP depending on family income.

The Canada Disability Savings Grant pays an amount into the RDSP depending on the amount of private contributions to the RDSP and the beneficiary’s family income.
If the income is $75,769* or less, the annual grant is
$3 for every $1 contributed on the first $500.
$2 for every $1 contributed on the next $1000.
So $1500 contributions will result in a grant payment of $3500.
If the income is higher, the grant matches the contributions dollar for dollar up to $1000.

The Canada Disability Savings Bond is paid into an RDSP by the Government of Canada, even if no contributions were made to the plan. If a beneficiary’s family income is $21,287 or less, the DCS Bond will contribute a maximum of $1,000 annually into an RDSP.

To qualify for the CDS Grant or the CDS Bond the beneficiary must open an RDSP, have a Social Insurance Number, be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, be a Canadian resident, and file taxes.

There you will find approximately one half hour of information about how to manage debt, and how to determine if the Orderly Payment of Debt Program will be the right choice for you. The OPD program is offered exclusively for Alberta residents through Money Mentors.
