Some money sites claim that “essential spending” – taxes, food, shelter, utilities, etc should be no more than 60% of overall pretax income. In a supercharged economy like Alberta, is this possible? What percentage does the “average” Albertan have at the end of the month for discretionary spending and/or savings? I know many families are paying 50% of total income (and frequently more) just for rent or mortgage payments.
